2025 Malawi National State of the Environment and Outlook Report

NSEOR Workshop

The Malawi Environment Protection Authority, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, acting on behalf of the Government of Malawi, as the principal agency for the protection and management of the environment and sustainable utilization of natural resources is proud to announce the upcoming release of the 2025 Malawi National State of the Environment and Outlook Report (NSEOR). The landmark launch of the 2025 Malawi NSEOR is expected in the third or fourth quarter of the current fiscal year.

This critical assessment will provide an in-depth review of the environmental pressures, challenges, and opportunities facing Malawi today, using the globally recognized Global Environment Outlook (GEO) methodology. The NSEOR process is being supported by the Government of Norway through its Energy for Development (EfD) Knowledge Programme, with technical support provided by GRID-Arendal and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The NSEOR is a massive undertaking that harnesses Malawian local expertise. The report is being developed by over 60 academics who are experts in their respective fields, with MEPA as the lead coordinating body. The NSEOR will play a central role in monitoring and guiding Malawi’s environmental and developmental progress. It will assess the drivers of environmental change, examine the current state and trends of natural resources, evaluate the effectiveness of policy responses, and offer a comprehensive outlook for the future.

A Tool for Transformation

The 2025 NSEOR serves as a strategic planning tool that aligns and complements key national and international frameworks, including:

  • The Environment Management Act of 2017
  • Malawi 2063 Vision (Enabler 7: Environmental Sustainability)
  • Malawi Energy Compact
  • Malawi Implementation Plan 1 (MIP-1)
  • The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

These frameworks recognise Malawi’s vulnerability and resilience to climate-related disasters, and highlight that environmental sustainability is not optional; it is critical for Malawi’s economic growth, social well-being, livelihoods, and long-term resilience.

Looking Ahead

The last State of the Environment report in Malawi was produced in 2010. The 2025 edition builds on those foundations with updated research, expanded datasets, and a growing base of national expertise. It aims to respond to new challenges and support evidence-based policy-making across sectors.

As Malawi moves forward on its development journey, the 2025 NSEOR will serve as a critical resource for government, civil society, academic institutions, and development partners alike.
